With Jehn Joyner on their side of the court, the Tsunamis needed only two sets to conquer their foes. The SIS Geckos drew the first lead, but were tied 8-8 with SCS thanks to William Fong’s pass. Joyner surprised the Geckos after finishing them off 25-16 in the first set, earning six points from his well executed serves.
A similar outcome resulted in the second set, with the Tsunamis gaining a three points ahead of the Geckos. SCS’ Tommy Choi saved the team twice from a couple of Phalai Frink’s spikes. Brianna Fajardo pushed the Tsunamis closer to victory after slaying the Geckos with a kill. With a powerful spike to SIS’ side of the court, Choi won the final point for SCS.
The team was gradually got better as they played through the regular season. As they got better, they grew more confidence,” said the Tsunamis’ head coach Darin Keizer. He worked with assistant coach Jake Van Dam through the playoffs and regular season.
Team SCS consisted of Jehn Joyner, Lindsay Esplin, Daniel Jang, Quintin and Colin Ramsey, Tommy Choi, William Fong, Linden Johnson, Xuan Jun Lu, Brianna Fajardo, Christina Matsunaga, Jin and Jun Pyo, Roy and Kui Lee, Shawn Bae, and Elnathan Wong.
Winning second place in the league, the Geckos included Allen Cepeda, Hunter Jewell, Jordan Butcher, Sophia Tenorio, Andrew Johnson, Emily Jones, Sung Min Ahn, Chris Park, Phalai Frink, Seung Hyun Lee, Chris Cepeda, along with Coach Kim Peterson.
Beating Whispering Palms School for third place was the Marianas Baptist Academy Stormz, who triumphed in their consolation game last Friday. The Stormz defeated team WPS 25-17 in the first set, but lost by 16-25 in the second set. The Stormz fought back in the final round, winning by 15-6.
Aside from team awards, COPSSA also granted MVP trophies to individuals from each participating school.
The MVPs included Michael Fidelino (Calvary Christian Academy), William Hinson (Grace Christian Academy), Won Woo Choi (MBA), Kenji Yamagata (Mount Carmel School), Tommy Choi (SCS), Jirene Lacarte (Seventh Day Adventist School), Chris Cepeda (SIS Team A), and Minori Yoshida (Whispering Palms School). Snatching the ‘League MVP’ award was SCS’ Jehn Joyner.
GCA scored one more trophy for the season after receiving COPSSA’s Sportsmanship Award.
