SAIPAN International School won the girls high school division championship of the NMIFA-PSS Interscholastic Soccer League SY23-24 by outclassing Marianas High School, 5-2, at the NMI Soccer Training Center in Koblerville on Thursday.
SIS had a roster full of offensive threats and their early pressure overwhelmed MHS as Audrey Castro found the back of the next at the 4th minute mark of the opening half. A minute later, teammate Kaithlyn Chavez joined the highlight reel with her first goal to extend SIS’ lead, 2-0.
After some back-and-forth action, the momentum started to shift toward MHS’ favor. Turning defense into offense, the team managed to catch SIS off guard, leaving Rizza Relucio alone for the easy finish. But SIS’s Chavez remained an offensive threat as she added her second contribution at the 21st minute mark to hold a safe distance, 3-1.
The action slowed down during the second half until Chavez picked up where she left off with two consecutive goals at the 34th and 38th minute marks for the hat-trick that further stretched the gap, 5-1.
But MHS continued to give it their all and went down fighting with Tamia Kileleman-Hix delivering a shot at the 45th minute mark before accepting defeat at the hands of SIS, 2-5.
Chavez scored four of the five goals for SIS which led to a well-deserved MVP Award while Kagman High School’s no.1 scorer, Pia Ngewakl, won the Golden Boot Award.
In the battle for third place, Saipan Southern High School bested KHS 3-1.
