It was a sure win for Sonics from the beginning after MVP Bryl Alegre fulfilled to his calling and teammate Jaymarck De Guzman scored 6 points and 4 points respectively in the first quarter. Alegre then moved on to score 16 points throughout the game while De Guzman garnered 11 points for the Sonics.
By the end of the first quarter the Sonics pushed past the Rollers by 5 points, 13-8.
The Rollers bounced back in the second quarter by attempting to make more balls to basket connections. Mike Mancao scored a down town shot followed by a charity shot and then reinforced by a jump shot to collar 6 points for the Rollers. But the Sonics were out for blood and were on a winning rampage.
Alegre, Jaymarck Deguzman, and Christian Mizer each bucketed 4 points a piece to widen the 5 point lead. The three players were successful in blowing another chunk through the gap to widen it to 11 points, 33-18 by half time.
Both teams anticipated the second half of the game with renewed hope and vigor. Alegre, De Guzman, and Nevin Salem each collared 5 points a piece upon entering the third quarter to shut the Rollers out and dim their hopes for the championship title.
It was all down to the last period of the game. The Rollers’ Erick Dela Rosa scored a whopping 15 point mark in his attempt to catch up to the Sonics. But the damage was already done and far beyond repair from the previous quarters and fatigue got the better part of the Rollers.
The Sonics stepped up one last notch and together, they achieved greatness after crushing the Rollers in the final minutes of the game after pocketing 20 points together to win the 15 and under Saipan Rotary Basketball League championships with an unblemished record of at least 8 wins and no losses, 70-53.
The results of the awards ceremony will be published on Thursday’s edition of the Marianas Variety along with the 19 and under results.
