SAIPAN Southern High School won two of the three division titles of the PSS-NMNPSF Interscholastic Outrigger Race Series SY24-25 at Kilili Beach on Saturday.
It was a tough competition, but SSHS could not be outperformed as they secured the championship with a total of 145 points.
In the 500m double points event, SSHS finished first in the preliminary round with a time of 02:47.970 to collect 14 points followed by Kagman High School with 10 points (02:53.220), Mount Carmel School with 6 points (02:55.200), and Marianas High School with 6 points (03:03.100).
SSHS solidified their victory in the final round with another first-place finish, clocking 02:49.610 to collect 28 points.
In second, third and fourth places were KHS with 20 points (02:53.780), MCS with 12 points (02:58.360), and MHS with 10 points (03:065.460).
The 1000m race saw SHSS finishing first in both rounds.
In the preliminary round, SSHS came out on top with a time of 05:59.260 to earn 14 points while KHS finished second for 10 points (06:15.100). In third and fourth places were MHS with 6 points (06:16.100), and MCS with 2 points (06:45.540).
In the finals, SSHS emerged triumphant with a time of 06:09.640 for 28 points followed by MHS with 20 points (06:12.240), KHS with 12 points (06:21.670), and MCS with 4 points (06:49.200).
Combining the results in all three events in the 500m and 1000m races, as well as the long-distance competition, SSHS led with a total of 145 points to claim the boys division championship title.
In second, third and fourth places were KHS with 115 points followed by MHS with 54, and MCS with 47.
SSHS bagged its second championship by ruling the mixed division with a total of 142 points.
In the 500m prelims, KHS stole the show with a first-place finish, clocking 03:10.970 while MHS came in second (03:16.840), SSHS finished third (03:18.790), and MCS placed fourth (03:22.550).
In the finals, SSHS clinched first place with a time of 03:05.190, beating KHS, which settled for second place (03:06.450), followed by MHS in third (03:08.160), and MCS in fourth (03:30.750).
In 1000m event, SSHS topped the prelims with a time of 06:52.210 followed by KHS (07:08.050) and MHS (07:13.270). MCS suffered a disqualification.
In the final round, MHS came in first with a time of 06:43.970 while SSHS settled for second place (06:44.290). KHS was third (06:43.970) and MCS was fourth (07:26.410).
With a total of 142 points, SSHS secured the division title.
In second place was KHS with 98 points, slipping past MHS, which settled for third with 91 points, and MCS in fourth with 46 points.
SSHS co-captain Ray said the season was “pretty intense.” “We were pretty shaky at first but here we are in the finals, and we did a lot better than expected,” Ray added. “We had high hopes for the boys as a few of them joined the Micro Cup.”
SSHS practices twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to sunset, with a considerable portion of its lineup also part of the Saipan Paddling Club.
