Student athletes of the month recognized

Bowling federation’s Marion Mckenzie and Tennis federation’s Thea Minor earned NMASA’s nod last January.

Mckenzie was able to edge past rival MJ Aldan during the first game for January’s Fiji Water’s Prince and Princess of the lanes with 147 pinfalls.

Mckenzie tallied 154 pinfalls, 129 pinfalls, and 160 pinfalls for an overall 590 pinfalls; a 147.5 pinfall average.

Although losing the crown during the second game last January, Mckenzie clinched the 2010 Prince of the Lanes finals prior to that.

Minor, on the otherhand, was recognized twice for the Month of January and March for making it into the 2011 Victorian Junior Grasscourt Championships at the Wodonga Tennis Centre in Victoria and bagging three coveted trophies during the 2011 Shirley Lai Memorial Cup in Guam last February.

NMASA’s February male and female student athletes’ awards were clinched by Swimming federation’s Lukas Kang and Tennis Federation’s Tammy Ackerman.

Kang shined during Saipan Swim Club’s two day swim event last February while Ackerman topped the 12U age division of the Northern Marianas Islands Tennis Association’s junior tennis rankings for 2010-11 after bagging the junior tennis championships.

Just recently Saipan Community School’s long distance runner Tammy Ackerman also bagged gold medals in the 12U 800m, 1,500m, and 3,000m run posting the best time during the 2011 PSS/McDonalds Track and Field Championships held last weekend.

Ackerman posted 02:49.51 in the 800m, 06:08.42 in the 1,500m, and 13:29.58 in the 3,000m besting 10 other competitors vying for the top spots.

NMASA’s March male and female student athletes’ award was given to Basketball federation’s Juan Maratita and Tennis federation’s Thea Minor.

Maratita competed with the Ol’Aces Basketball team during the 19th Annual Rotary Club of Saipan Youth Basketball League in the 19U Division.

Maratita led his team through the regular season pushing their statistics to an 8-2 record and clinching #3 seeding heading into the playoffs.

The Ol’Aces moved forward during the finals round to be pegged up against the Sonics with Maratita at the. Maratita, along with his teammates, led the way to bag a one point victory over the Sonics, 65-64 with a 14 point performance earning the Most Valuable Player award.
