TANIA Tan set a new NMI record in the indoor 1-mile open distance with a time of 5:22.51 at The CIRCUIT NYC, held at the Armory Track in New York on Saturday.

In an interview with Variety, Tan said her main goal was to try and set a new personal record. But “with that came setting a new NMI national record, too, I guess,” she said with delight.

Although Tan may be used to the atmosphere and competition by now, what made this accomplishment extra memorable was the absence of an on-site coach.

“This was my first year competing without a coach on-site and traveling to races on my own,” Tan said.

“It is a little tougher to be self-disciplined and having to book your own accommodations, not having anyone calling your splits each lap, registering for races, collecting your own bib numbers, knowing what heat you’re in, etc.,” she said.

“I feel like by making sure you’re on top of all this, it adds a little extra stress mentally before a race so that’s a little tough because you want to stay on top of everything and not miss your race,” she added.

Tan finished 10th in her heat.

The avid runner was not done, however, as she took on another race just two days later in the Women’s 3000m event of the NYRR Night at the Races with a season best time of 10:31.31 to finish fourth.

“Running back-to-back races is always tough,” Tan said. “I know myself and I know I always struggle with the second race, so I just try to tell myself to just go out there, have fun, and to do my best,” she added.

“I would just like to thank my parents for continuing to support me with all my running goals and dreams. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to achieve these records so I’m truly grateful,” Tan said.
