Tinian depends title in Goodwill Pingpong Tournament

Tinian’s Ma who played 24 games scored 8-0 to top the entire round, while team mate, Luke placed second.

Although he lost to Saipan’s Budhi Gurung, Luke managed to make it in 27 games.

Saipan’s Roh settled for third with 6-8 after defeating Tinian’s Charlie and Robin who had earlier won 6-8.

Jean Shi lost 15 games and Roh lost only 10 games.

16 players from both teams made this year’s table tennis event, according to Gurung as the games started in a round robin formats totaling to 64 matches.

In doubles competition, Saipan team Jean Shi-Roh tandem defeated Ma-Liyang tandem by 3-2 in the finals.

There were eight pairs—four from Saipan and four from Tinian who played.

In the first round, Charlie- Sudong team of Tinian beat Ahn and Kang by 3-0.

Steve and Park from Saipan beat Alfred and Bright by 3-0. Ma and Liyang from Tinian beat Budhi and Hamamoto by 3-2.

In the second round, Jean and Roh from Saipan beat Charlie and Sudong by 3-0 and Ma and Liyang from Tinian beat Steve and Park by 3-0.

The next tournament Gurung said in a email, will be held on at the Ada Gym on Saipan on Sept 12.

Marianas Amateur Table Tennis Association President Steve Lim said there is a great possibility of replacing some of Korean players who already participated with their strong players who were not able to make it last May 23.

“As usual, we will form eight players again from Saipan, four from MATTA and four from Korean Ping Pong Association. As usual, thanks once again for supporting us by publishing our articles in your prestigious daily news papers,” the MATTA president said.

Ping Pong practice schedules on every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 p.m., to 10 p.m.
