TEAM NMI got off to a rough start in the Crowne Plaza Northern Marianas Open 2025, as each player suffered a loss against their respective opponents and was eliminated from contention during Tuesday’s opening matches in the men’s singles event at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Kicking off NMI’s debut was Daniell Pablo, who bowed to Canada’s Hing Long Wong.
Wong played the aggressor, setting the tone early with three consecutive points. Although Pablo broke the silence by scoring his first two points, he was quickly overwhelmed as Wong left him behind with seven unanswered points to lead comfortably, 12-3. Pablo was allowed only one more point before surrendering the first game, 21-4.
In the second game, NMI’s Pablo tweaked his approach and went toe-to-toe with Wong in the early rallies, holding a 3-3 deadlock. Unfortunately, he was quickly outpaced again, as Wong nearly mirrored his earlier performance by scoring 15 straight points en route to another 21-4 win to secure the match.
Sharing a similar outcome was NMI’s Md Ratul Hossain, who was defeated by Korea’s Hae Deun Kim, 21-4, 21-4.
Putting up a fight for Team NMI was Joseph Paraiso, who kept Malaysia’s Jaylon Chee on his toes.
In the first game, Paraiso took charge, scoring the first two points. The tables quickly turned, however, as Chee adjusted and began playing to his strengths, taking a 13-6 advantage by the midway point.
Paraiso fought hard to close the distance, but each time he scored, Chee responded with multiple points of his own to take the first game, 21-10.
After their initial exchange, Chee was fully warmed up and claimed the second game with a similar result, 21-10, to secure the match.
Other NMI players who were eliminated included:
• John Paul Delos Reyes, who lost to Japan’s Minoru Koga (21-7, 21-1)
• Brandon Manacop, who fell to Canada’s Lai Yin Chung (21-6, 21-7)
• Nolan Nate, who was defeated by Japan’s Kosuke Masumoto (21-4, 21-0)
• Andre Zapata, who was bested by Malaysia’s Wei Hong Low (21-6, 21-7)
• Mokmin Kim, who was trounced by Japan’s Keita Makino (21-1, 21-3)
