In an interview, MRA president Charles Cepeda said the board wants to encourage  new or beginner riders “to come out and join and experience the racing atmosphere.”

“Plus, we just want to get together again as a group and stay active before the next season,” he added.

MRA plans to make this an annual event and hopes that with the newly added beginners class, more riders will come and participate, Cepeda said.

As long as there are three or more beginners per class, separate races could be made just for them, he added.

“Again, we want to encourage all new members and riders to start racing and competing, and the best time to start is now. A lot of people think that only the ‘fast or experienced riders’ are allowed to race, but this is definitely not the case,” Cepeda said.

“All our current racers have had a lot of practice in the races this past year and that is how they all improved! So we want those new racers to gain that same experience too.”

Cepeda said MRA has already added classes for women and men in the Power Puff, Big Bikes and ATV divisions. As for eligibility in the beginners class, it comes down to anyone who has a dirt bike and who has not raced an official MRA event. There are some new racers who have raced a couple of races this season, but are technically still ‘beginners.’  So beginner, novice and inexperienced riders will be the criteria.”

MRA’s Labor Day event will feature the usual classes vying for the top spots in a two-heat format with riders racing the first heat in the morning and the second heat later in the afternoon.
