NMI earns silver and bronze medals in athletics

THE NMI’S athletics team made their way to the podium Thursday after earning silver and bronze medals in three separate events at the Oleai Sports Complex.

The NMI’s Denise Myers bagged the silver medal in the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase event with a time of 12:18.79.

Papua New Guinea’s Mary Tenge led the pack at 11:50.24 to win the gold while the Solomon Islands’ Sharon Firisua clocked 12:38.78 to claim the bronze. Another NMI athlete, Andrei Kaithlyn Chavez, finished fourth with a time of 13:11.49.

Winning bronze was the NMI team of Casey Cruz, Maria Quitugua, Kina Rangamar, and Zarinae Sapong in the women’s 4×100 meter relay with a finish time of 53.98.

Papua New Guinea’s Adrine Monagi, Toea Wisil, Isila Apkup and Leonie Beu earned the gold with a time of 45.85 while New Caledonia’s Ateliana Magoni, Loan Ville, Manuella Gavin and Esther Wejieme settled for silver with a time of 48.50.

In the men’s shot put, the NMI’s Dennis Borja received the bronze for throwing a distance of 12.08m.

The gold medalist was Tahiti’s Tumatai Dauphin with a distance of 15.55m while Papua New Guinea’s Debono Paraka earned silver with a distance of 13.64m.
