IAN Chae and Ryan Choi topped the boys doubles-12 category of the 2022 TSL CNMI Junior Tennis Tournament on Sunday at American Memorial Park.
On Saturday, April 30, Chae and Choi faced Jihun Park and Lina Tsukagoshi.
In the first set, Chae and Choi worked well together with Choi playing the role of the aggressor while Chae covered the grounds from behind en route to a 6-4 triumph.
However, in the second set, Park and Tsukagoshi managed to turn the tables with their own mix of attacks to outscore Chae and Choi, 6-7(2).
In the third and final set, Chae and Choi pressed on to outlast Park and Tsukagoshi, 10-6, and notch their first match victory in the tournament.
For their second and final match, Chae and Choi faced Antonio Heras and Quido Jambor.
From start to finish, Chae and Choi controlled the pace of the game using their tried and tested strategy. Choi unleashed aggressive returns at the front line while Chae cleared the back.
Jambor and Heras tried to keep up with the tempo, but they were unable to return with accuracy as Chae and Choi cruised to victory to claim the title, 6-0, 6-0.
BD 14
In the boys doubles-14 category, Henry Choi and Nason Wessel emerged triumphant with an undefeated record.
The two were unstoppable in their first match against Eamon Tang and Tahir Shakir, winning 6-0, 6-0.
They then notched their second match victory by outplaying Henry Yeom and Kiwon Lee, 6-3, 6-0.
In the title match against Stephen Yeom and Si Woo Lee, Choi and Wessel were in their element, winning 6-1, 6-3.
BD 18
In the boys doubles-18 category, Andy Kim and David Kwon brought home the title.
Their first opponents were Jun Wang and June Yu who had to settle for defeat, 2-6, 4-6.
Kim and Kwon then powered past Minseong Kim and Jack Linden 6-0, 6-0.
In the final match against Cody Shimizu and Simon Tang, Kim and Kwon played well but did have a tough time defending.
Shimizu’s mix-up of smashes and lob returns kept Kim and Kwon on their toes but they still reigned supreme in the end, winning both sets 6-3, 6-2.
GD 14
In the girls doubles-14 category, Irin Chung and Savita Sikkel bagged the title after defeating Anne Lee and Sarah Lim 6-1, 6-3, and Hoo Wang and Hannah Chae, 6-4, 6-7(1), 10-7.
