Thompson, Sikkel notch personal records in world junior swimming championships

JINIE Thompson and Savita Sikkel did not win medals at the 8th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Peru, Lima, but they set new personal records.

From Aug. 30 to Sept. 4, the CNMI swimmers participated in several events.

Jinie Thompson, 16, competed in a total of five events. She marked her first personal best or PB in the Women’s 100 Backstroke with a time of 01:24.17, reaching the 50m halfway point at 39.54 and placing third in heat 1. She also performed well in the Women’s 100 Freestyle, recording a PB of 01:09.45 and placing fourth in the provisional heat.

In the Women’s 50m Butterfly, she clocked at 35.47, a few seconds behind the leader of heat 1. She also competed in the Women’s 50 Backstroke where she timed 38.09, and in the Women’s 50 Freestyle, clocking 31.09.

Savita Sikkel, 14, recorded four PBs.

In the Women’s 100 Backstroke, she clocked 1:26.42,  two seconds behind her teammate. Then in the Women’s 50 Butterfly, her finish time was 36.28. In the Women’s 50 Backstroke, she clocked 38.31. Her fourth PB came in the Women’s 50 Freestyle which she finished with a time of 32.12.
