DPS: Social media directive to deter disclosure of information regarding ongoing cases

THE Department of Public Safety has issued a social media directive to deter disclosure of information regarding ongoing cases, DPS spokesman Adrian Pangelinan said.

“The directive was sent out…to prevent any future photo, video, audio postings (through WhatsApp; or any [DPS personnel posting on their] personal social media platforms of information regarding) any ongoing cases,” he added.

“For example: if an officer responds to an incident he/she should refrain taking pictures, or video at the scene and making them public (through social media) especially if it is a sensitive case).”

Posting photos and videos of victims is uncaring toward the victims and their loved ones, Pangelinan said.

The Department of Public Safety social media directive was signed by Police Director Aniceto Ogumoro.

“The purpose of the directive on social media is to ensure that all DPS personnel adhere and understand their rights as private citizens, and how certain activities on social media can affect them as DPS employees,” Ogumoro stated in the memo.

“The department understands that each employee is free to express themselves as private citizens, but regarding department matters, there are steps that employees can take to express their concerns,” Ogumuro added.
