SAIPAN Mayor Ramon “RB” Camacho said he will seek a second four‑year term, adding that he hopes to continue the public safety and community‑based initiatives that have defined his first three years in office.

Camacho said his decision to run again came after encouragement from his family, campaign committee, and residents.

“They asked me if I’m thinking about seeking re‑election. Yes — if the people give me this chance again for a second term, I’ll continue what I’ve been doing by promoting a safe community, a safe village, and a clean island,” he said.

In an interview last week, the mayor said his administration has emphasized “taking action” on crime prevention, village maintenance, and partnerships with nonprofit groups and the business community.

“My objective is to reduce or eradicate crime in our village and to promote the identity of our island,” he said. “This island is a diverse community, and I’m appealing to all different ethnic communities here.”

Camacho said concerns raised by visiting Japanese officials — particularly about crime — have reinforced his push for stronger community policing and public awareness campaigns. He cited his partnership with the Department of Public Safety and its “See Something, Say Something, Do Something” initiative.

“We’re working hand in hand,” he said. “The community is really coming forward because they see it’s a good campaign and they’re willing to join.”

Message to residents

A retired police major, Camacho urged residents to work together to keep neighborhoods safe and report suspicious activity.

“Let’s all partner up, let’s work together, and let’s be team players to police up our island,” he said. “Let’s remove this fear by working together.”

Camacho officially announced his candidacy during a birthday fundraising event on Sept. 5, saying he remains committed to serving the community.

Public service background

Camacho served 20 years with the Department of Public Safety and 17 years on the Parole Board. He completed three terms on the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council, where he helped establish the Leadership Courtyard in Chalan Kanoa and worked with then-Commerce Secretary Arnold Palacios to build the farmers market. He has also led the Sabalu Farmers Association for 20 years and chaired the Farm Service Agency for 13 years.

Camacho said he maintains a positive working relationship with the current Municipal Council.

“With the pressing issues we have, it’s time to embrace and work together so we can brainstorm the best path forward,” he said.

So far, the only other mayoral hopeful is Precinct 4 Rep. Joel Castro Camacho, who announced his candidacy in November.
