NMI judiciary eyes mental health court

THE CNMI judiciary is looking forward to establishing a mental health court, Superior Court Presiding Judge Roberto C. Naraja said in his remarks during the 2021 Law Week proclamation signing ceremony at the Guma Hustisia or House of Justice in Susupe on May 14.

The theme for this week’s Law Week — May 14-21 — is “Advancing Rule of Law Now.”

“The rule of law is a settled principle for ensuring an orderly and just society,” Judge Naraja said.

“The court aspires to treat everyone equally under the law and provide for fair and clear process enforcing the law,” he added.

He said the future is “problem-solving courts,” and the judiciary “looks forward to implementing the latest one, mental health court— this is another step forward in pursuit of justice; a progression advancing the rule of law.”

He did not identify a funding source for a mental health court.

The Law Week proclamation was signed by CNMI Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexandro C. Castro, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, Senate President Jude U. Hofschneider, Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez, District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona, and CNMI Bar president Charity R. Hodson.

The event included the unveiling of the new CNMI judiciary seal at the Covid-19 screening and security zone of the entrance to the Guma Hustisia.
