MISO boys basketball to feature five teams

MISO will feature five teams in this year’s regular season, which include Marianas High School, Mount Carmel School, Kagman High School, Saipan Southern High School, and Grace Christian Academy. In addition, Tinian will have a participating team in the league’s tournament set for February 11 and 12.

“Our league is slowly but surely expanding to include more and more teams!” said MISO’s acting president Nick Gross in an email.

“We have decided to change the format of our regular season so that the season doesn’t drag on for two-three months, so we’ve scheduled two varsity games on the nights that the private schools are playing,” he added.

Currently, only KHS, MHS, and SSHS have junior varsity teams. In games involving public schools, junior varsity matches will be held first (4:30 p.m.), followed by varsity teams. MISO would like to call a mandatory meeting for coaches and officials this Thursday, Dec. 9, 6 p.m. at the MHS gymnasium’s conference room.

All games will be held at the MHS gym. The tournament will be played in a double elimination format. Regular season records will determine teams’ seeds in the bracket with Tinian receiving the middle seed (No. 3) automatically.

Also launching next month is MISO’s girls’ volleyball season, with the first game set for Jan. 11. GCA, MHS, SSHS, Saipan International School, and KHS will be competing in the regular season, with MHS having two teams. Tinian will also be competing in this year’s tournament scheduled for Feb. 18 and 19.

MISO will have another mandatory meeting on Monday, Dec. 13, 6 p.m., at the MHS gym’s conference room for coaches and officials involved in girls’ volleyball.

Home teams will have the choice of serving or receiving. All games are played in a best-of-three format, with a game point of 25 in the first two sets and 15 in the third. Teams will be playing all three sets. Like the boys’ basketball season, teams’ regular season records in girls’ volleyball will determine their seed.
