Just as their team name implies, team Yo Face got up-close to the Magics and defeated the league-season champions in an overtime set. The Yo Faces showed dominance in the first set with 16-12. Despite their loss, the Magics fought back in the second set 16-2. They later gained the overall lead with 28-18.
In Rocball however, a team can lose two of three sets and still succeed if they win the final set and have the highest amount of points. In the case of the Magics, they outscored team Yo Face 42-34 but lost the final set. They had several opportunities to “juice out” and win, but failed to convert a serving point to win the set. Behind in most of the final set, team Yo Face retaliated to win 16-15.
In addition, overtime sets regenerate the sport. In Rocball overtime, points scored and sets won in a regular game are worthless as to how the winner of the game is determined. In the match between teams Yo Face and Magic, it looked as though the latter was going to send their opponents back to last place. In the ‘high school version’ of overtime, games are given three sets and only one overtime set of five points or a goal, due to the lunch time schedule.
Both teams tied 3-3 when Yo Face penalty-served and lost a point and their serve. However, they scored off their foe’s serve and brought another tie before tallying more points and ending the Magics’ Rocball season.
The Magics outscored team Yo Face 6-5 in aces, 5-3 in kees, and 2-1 in goals. Magic’s Wilton Laniyo was the game’s heavy hitter with two aces and four kees for 12 points. His teammate Joemil Laniyo became a Rocball “Master Blaster” when he struck down a served ball at the net. Joemil is the only high school player this year that has scored at least once in each of Rocball’s six scoring categories: volleypoint, ace, xunk, kee, jam, and goal.
