Low turnout for Boy Scout registration

Only two parents — along with their children — were present for the registration.

Calistro I. Reyes, director of the CNMI Boy Scouting program, said he will ask the principal of Tanapag Elementary School if she will allow him to hold a meeting during the school’s next PTSA meeting.

When asked about the low turnout, Reyes said: “I believe the required annual donation that comes with applying for the program is hindering the parents’ interests in registering their child.”

The Boy Scouts program trains its members in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and, for older scouts, career-oriented programs in partnership with community organizations.

For younger members, the program inculcates typical scouting values such as trustworthiness, good citizenship, and outdoors skills, through a variety of activities such as camping, aquatics and hiking.

The annual fee is $15 which will go directly to the program.

“These are hard times, I understand that,” Reyes said. “However, I’d like to remind  the parents that the $15 will be taken care of and we welcome you to register into this great program.”

The donation fee will be paid by the Aloha Council, he added.

Reyes said the date and venue of their next meeting will be announced at a later time.

Boys from 7 to 17 years old who are interested in joining the Boy Scouts of America are asked to attend the next meeting.

Parents are kindly requested to be present during the registration.
