Former drug defendant wants his crystal ornament, laptop back

Yuhua Wang said the ornament, a gift from his girlfriend, had a retail value of $130 and was taken by authorities when they raided his apartment in Fina Sisu on March 1, 2010.

He said police also took $950 cash and three laptops, two of which are owned by other tenants.

Wang said only $730.40 in cash and other personal effects were returned to him, but not the swan-shaped crystal ornament and the three laptops.

Yesterday, Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert Naraja told the government to release to Wang his crystal ornament and  laptop.

Wang, together with an interpreter and another friend, was outside the courtroom when the motion filed by the Public Defender’s Office on his behalf was granted by the court.

The laptops were not on the list of the pieces of property seized by police from Wang as indicated in a government receipt.

The court dismissed the drug charges against Wang and his co-defendant, Le Xiang Chen, also known as Old Man, last March after the Attorney General’s Office failed to present pieces of evidence that included a lab analysis of the purported seized controlled substance and the informant’s background.
