3 copper wire thieves arrested

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo yesterday imposed a $15,000 cash bail each on Theodore O. Pehnos, 23, Roland R. Kaipat, 29, and Shabbo C. Sablan, 21.

The defendants were remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after their initial court appearance.

They were being held on charges of burglary and criminal mischief.

Victim Helen Ala-Alou estimated the cost of damage amounting to $10,435.20 in restoring the damaged electrical system, according to Detective Steven A. Castro.

Officers Jeff Bahillo and John Cabrera responded minutes after a call regarding a burglary in progress that was received by the Department of Public Safety at about 2:07 a.m.

As responding officers arrived in the parking lot and were getting close to the restaurant, they heard voices.

After police trained their flashlights into the gate, a man wearing a black t-shirt and a pair of short pants tried to escape, followed by two men.

Police scoured the area and later heard noise from a concrete fence line on the northwestern corner, and saw a man climbing on top of a container and onto a building.

The man, later identified as Pehnos, tried to hide in a grassy area but police found him.

Police recovered from his possession a bolt cutter.

Police found copper wires already skinned and ready for transport in a generator room of a nearby building.

The second suspect, identified as Kaipat, was arrested while hiding in a small utility room.

After the third suspect, identified as Sablan, was arrested on the third floor, he ran away from the arresting officer and jumped to the second floor’s balcony.

Sablan eluded another officer, but “Officer Cabrera managed to apply one burst of his issued pepper spray mace to [Sablan’s] facial area and that’s when [he] stopped and was apprehended,” Detective Castro said.
