Vice Speaker Felicidad T. Ogumoro, who vacated her post as SHEFA chairwoman, said aside from his two-year term, Mafnas will also serve the remaining part of her term that ends on March 11 next year.
Ogumoro, Covenant-Saipan, said Mafnas is “very strong” in promoting education.
“He worked hard to make sure that his children complete their college education. He is a person who showed great commitment in other areas of work for the community. He has excellent skills to work with the other board members,” Ogumoro added.
She reiterated that John K. Tenorio and Jose Leon Guerrero are the only other members of the board.
Ogumoro earlier said that Maggie Camacho, the current board chairwoman, and Josephine T. Sablan were appointed on Jan. 6, but the delegation failed to confirm their nominations on time or by the end of April.
Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores, who nominates the board members, told the delegation that Mafnas is “an exceptional and well-qualified individual who I am confident will be a great asset to the SHEFA board.”
Mafnas said he will do his best to make decisions that are beneficial to the program and to its recipients, the college students.
SHEFA is a scholarship program for qualified Saipan college students. Its funding source are the poker fees collected on island.
