Rollers seek help for Guam trip

Saving $2,100 in the past few months, the RBC must earn another $800 to accommodate its 60 players, according to Head Coach Joe Diaz.

“One of the most anticipated events that a Rollers  team member looks forward [to] is the chance to play against Guam and our other island neighbors,” said Diaz.

“The kids meet new people and learn new skills when we participate in these tournaments,” he added.

The TakeCare tournament will take place at Guam’s Tamuning gym, and will last from Nov. 18 to the 30th. The RBC will be the only group representing Saipan among 57 other teams.

“I am pleading for assistance from anybody who can kindly help these children. Most of them have never left Saipan and have been looking forward to this chance,” said Diaz.

The RBC, with players formerly known as the ‘G-Rollers,’ was established in 1999 and consists of 132 members.

This will be their first time to compete in the TakeCare tournament.

“I’m proud to say that in addition to playing terrific ball, our kids grow up into responsible young adults via the other extracurricular activities we have such as beach cleanups, park rehabilitations, and other volunteer projects that we participate in,” said Diaz.

The RBC will send players from its 12 and under, 14U, 16U, 18U, and 21U divisions. Though accompanied by 12 chaperones, each player is only required to pay $175 for his or her transportation costs. All accommodations and reservations will be managed by the RBC’s committee.

The Rollers are currently hosting a 2010 Family 3-on-3 Fun Basketball Tournament, which will take place on Nov. 13 and 14. Entry fee for each team is $20.
