CUC hires 6 new guest workers for power plant

The six will replace the eight who have resigned in the last eight months, he added.

CUC human resources manager Frankie P. Cepeda said the six new workers are power plant trade technicians.

They are expected to report for work next week, he said. Each has a two-year contract.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s recent executive order, which extended the state of emergency declaration for CUC, allowed for the hiring of the non-U.S. technical workers.

The governor said an adequate technical staff is essential to the power plant’s operations.

“Any significant reduction in CUC’s present technical workforce could seriously compromise CUC’s ability to generate and distribute power,” the governor said.

CUC has filled  almost all of its 20 vacancies and is also seeking to renew 18 technical and professional contracts for non-U.S. citizens, saying “without these positions filled, CUC’s operations would be severely compromised.”

Within this week, three meter readers will report for work in addition to the three students from the Northern Marianas Trades Institute.

Cepeda said they will also have two accounting technicians and one accountant onboard this week.
