Seminar on legal aspects of personnel record keeping and EEO compliance

This half-day seminar will be held at the Pacific Islands Club Charley’s Cabaret on Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, with lunch to follow.

Are you doing a good job keeping all employee records in one place, including medical records and I-9 forms?

Think again: certain confidential records must be secured separately from an employee’s general personnel file.

You say that you are a small business owner and you only hire residents so you haven’t been using an I-9 form?

Whoops — the I-9 form is required for all new employees, both resident and nonresident.

Thinking of throwing out personnel files once they are 10 years old?

If you do, you may run afoul of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009.

Do you throw away applications of individuals whom you don’t hire when a position is open?

Ouch!  That could lead you to a courtroom if an applicant later files a case against you for not hiring them.

Do you know how to tell if you are discriminating?

Unintentional discrimination is illegal too.

Learn the different ways an employee can prove discrimination and how to spot and fix problems before an employee sues.

These are just some of the many common errors and misconceptions about the legal aspects of personnel record keeping and EEO compliance that will be presented at this seminar.

The training could help you stay out of the courtroom and avoid hefty penalties for violating federal laws since you won’t be able to claim ignorance as your defense.

The cost of the seminar, including lunch and handouts, is $25 for individuals who are a member of either SHRM CNMI or the Saipan Chamber of Commerce and $35 for individuals who are not a member of either organization.

Seats are limited, so reserve your seat now by contacting Janice Tenorio at 233-7150 or e-mailing [email protected].
