Rangamar breaks record at Australia

Rangamar won a silver medal in the javelin throw event, coming in second to Cook Islands’ Patricia Taea, whose record earned gold at 37.17 meters. Aside from winning a silver medal, Rangamar also broke through Emiliana Quitugua’s CNMI national record  with 35.17 meters in the javelin throw event.

Lia Rangamar was among the five CNMI athletes sent to Australia. Her father, Elias Rangamar, noted how proud he was of her, excelling in the event at such a young age. She came fourth in the women’s long jump, coming in at 4.45 meters. Beating her for the top three spot was Tonga’s Kalina Mama’o.

Accompanying her at the championships were Brandon Phillip, Jonavin Ichihara, Reylynn Sapong, and Kagman High School’s Douglas Dillay.

Aside from taking part in the men’s long jump, Phillip finished his 100 meter dash at 12.13 seconds. Dillay participated in the men’s 800 meter run, coming in at 2:12.60, and the 1500 meter run, coming in at 4:53.75.

Ichihara competed in the men’s long jump and surpassed Phillip in the 100 meter event by .03 seconds. Sapong, who described her experience as “fun and exciting,” participated in the women’s 400 meter dash and 800 meter run.

All five athletes were accompanied by their coach Robin Sapong, who is expected to arrive on island some time today. The three-day competition lasted from Thursday to Saturday last week.

Rangamar plans to join other sports in the nearby future, which include the upcoming cross-country competitions held by the Marianas Intramural Sports Organization.
