Vigilant inspection of water pipes necessary, says Malae

CUC Assistant Executive Director Utu Abe Malae said there’s a need for a “vigilant inspection” of these water pipes.

“This underscores the importance of not only proper construction but vigilant inspection,” he said.

Last week, CUC responded to a water leak alarm in the Puerto Rico area.  He said the 16-inch pipe sprung a large leak of about 100 gallons per minute across from Power Plant 4 in Puerto Rico.

The leak was repaired by the water crew headed by Melvin Tudela, he added.

Malae said they didn’t know how long the water was leaking but it was reported to them on Oct. 4.

“The cause of the one foot longitudinal crack to the pipe was that it was in contact with rocks,” he said.

“The pipe was not properly bedded when it was laid out,” he said.
