As of 11 a.m. yesterday, Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Thomas A. Blas Jr. said the pedestrian was still in the Commonwealth Health Center’s intensive care unit for close observation.
Blas said DPS received a call at about 9:06 p.m., Monday, regarding an auto-pedestrian crash.
At-scene investigation of Traffic Officer Sandy Hambros indicated that the pedestrian was struck by a northbound vehicle.
“The pedestrian was crossing the roadway from the west bound shoulder heading east,” Blas said.
He said the pedestrian was treated at the scene and immediately taken to CHC.
CHC doctors said the victim sustained multiple head fractures with severe brain injuries, Blas said.
After the crash scene was processed by Traffic Investigator Norris Kwon, Blas said speed and alcohol were ruled out on the part of the driver.
The vehicle, a white 1993 Toyota Tercel four-door sedan, was impounded. Its lower left front shield was damaged.
Police did not mention the blood alcohol content of the driver, a 55-year-old man, who did not sustain any injury.
The driver was also not identified by the police, which said the victim had a blood alcohol content of .213 percent.
Blas said the crash is still under investigation.
