Court to determine whether DPW official in assault case can afford lawyer

“Financial assessment is confidential…. Thus, we cannot release any information,” Chief Probation Officer Ursula I. Lifoifoid Aldan said in an e-mail to the Variety, referring to Department of Public Works technical services division director Joseph M. Inos Jr.

Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja will continue Inos’ arraignment on Oct. 4  after the DPW official appeared  in court on Monday without a lawyer.

“Probation assists the court with the defendant’s financial assessment, but determination is done by the court,” Aldan said.

The Attorney General’s Office has charged Inos with assault and battery, disturbing the peace, misconduct in office, and false arrest of a minor.

On Aug. 16, the AGO complaint stated, Inos “did unlawfully detain [the 17-year-old victim] by force against her will.”

The AGO said the defendant also “unlawfully struck, beat, wounded, or otherwise caused bodily harm, or had sexual contact” with his victim.

Variety earlier learned that a female Workforce Investment Agency trainee had accused Inos of sexually assaulting her in his office.
