CUC to start overhaul of Engine 8 after Christmas

After its completion in April, the engine is expected to produce 8 to 10 megawatts, he added.

On Oct. 26, CUC awarded a $740,000 contract to a Japan-based contractor for the rehabilitation of the foundation of Engines 1 and 8 at Power Plant 1.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Inc., which was given 60-day contract period, will finish the project by Dec. 24.

“The foundation strengthening and bolt replacement are on schedule for completion by Christmas,” Malae said. “However, that doesn’t mean the engine will be available as a Christmas present.”

He said they still have to overhaul the engine.

According to Malae, the engine’s foundation is good but the bolts that failed or are bent were installed too shallow and could not take the forces generated by the heavy rotating equipment.

Before the foundation strengthening and bolt work project was conducted, Engine 8 was producing a standby power of 4 megawatts, he said.

CUC’s power plant crews must expedite the overhaul of Engine 5 in order to replace the 4 megawatts from Engine 8, Malae said.

The overhaul of Engine 5 should be completed soon, he added.

He said Engine’s 1 foundation bolt replacement is also on schedule and will be completed by Christmas.

Five megawatts will be available again from Engine 1, he added.
