Professor: Windmill is practical

He said he has been working on the windmill’s design for 20 years now.

“If it was not possible I would not have taught it. But it’s more than just possible, it’s practical. I taught them how the people can build one in their own backyard inexpensively,” he said.

Hait said most of the windmills commonly seen have a horizontal axis.

“That’s fine until the wind comes from a different direction and then you got to have a way to make it crack and follow the wind,” he said.

The commercial models seen on TV with the big three arms are inefficient, he said.

“The commercial windmill has three thin blades and from the point of view of physics that’s fine provided that it rotates rapidly like an airplane propeller,” he added.

“That means most of the air goes in between of the blades and it misses and it doesn’t help generate power,” he said.

The windmill he designed actually captures most of the energy, he added.

“I showed them one they can build in their backyard that is much more efficient and it’s built of parts and things you can get here on the island,” Hait said.
