Correction
IN Wednesday’s news article regarding Northern Marianas College’s recent information session, it was mentioned that NMC will offer a new bachelor’s of science in education degree with emphasis in special education and early childhood education starting in the Spring 2010 semester.
NMC says that although its officials are working to implement these new programs, they will not be offered in the Spring 2010 semester.
“The proposal for the programs are slated to be reviewed by the college’s shared governance groups and the NMC board of regents within the next few months. The proposal will then be submitted for review and approval by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges,” NMC stated yesterday.
“However, it is important to note that a special education course and an early childhood education course will be offered as electives in the upcoming Spring 2010 semester.”
Book on cultural heritage available
THE NMI Council for the Humanities announces the availability of “The Rope of Tradition: Reflections of a Saipan Carolinian” by Lino M. Olopai, a media release stated.
The 258-page book, profusely illustrated with color and black and white photos, was originally published by the council in 2005 under its Micronesian Authors’ Initiative.
The initial print run quickly sold out and the council recently arranged for its reprinting to meet popular demand.
“The Rope of Tradition” documents Olopai’s lifelong efforts to document and better understand his rich cultural heritage and to seek a balance between traditional ways and the demands of the modern world.
It is a must read for anyone interested in indigenous Micronesian cultures and the issues and challenges confronting cultural preservation in the face of rapid globalization.
The book may be purchased at the council’s office in Springs Plaza, Gualo Rai, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. The book is priced at $18 per volume.
Those wishing more information about the book are invited to contact council staff at 235-4785.
