NMC, DCCA team up to enhance child care in NMI
(NMC) — The first cohort of three groups of caretakers from various child daycares around the island recently completed a professional development training program facilitated by Northern Marianas College.
The infant and toddler care training program was offered through a contract between the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs’ child care program and NMC’s Community Development Institute, which also offers a variety of other developmental courses in a range of fields.
“I am pleased with the initiative these individuals display in their efforts to enhance their professional capacity and the overall childcare services in the CNMI,” said NMC interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera.
Individuals from the first group completed 70 hours and underwent instruction in a number of topics, such as social-emotional growth and socialization, group care, learning and development, cultural and familial issues, and health and safety considerations.
Participants also conducted projects involving on-site observations and orientations.
“I would like to thank the staff of DCCA and CDI for all the hard work they have put into carrying out the program,” said DCCA Secretary Melvin O. Faisao. “I also encourage other agencies and individuals to look to NMC for their professional and training needs.”
Training instructors included child care program director Maribel Loste, NMC School of Education instructor Joylene Limes, and Hopwood Junior High School teacher Antonio Yarobwemal.
The second cohort of caretakers is scheduled to begin training on Feb. 18.
