Camacho: Government must help farmers

TO increase the productivity of local farmers, the CNMI government should continue assisting them, acting Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council Chairman Ramon. B. Camacho said.

He said he will again ask the government to give  farmers a special water rate.

“There’s no other way to subsidize the farmers,” he added.

According to Camacho, this scheme will also benefit farmers on Rota and Tinian.

Kagman farmers are not relying on the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. because they have their own untreated water sources.

But other farmers have no access to their own water sources.

“Kagman is a done deal,” Camacho said. “We are now looking into the concerns of the farmers outside Kagman.”

Every Tuesday, he said the farmers support group discusses programs and plans beneficial  to local farmers.

He said Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos have been supportive of their group.

Recently, Camacho said he discussed with CUC the possibility of a special water rate for farmers.

“This is an approach to increase the farmers’ production and improve local agriculture,” he added.

Hundreds of farmers will benefit from a special water rate, he said.
