130 students sign petition to retain McPhetres

NMC has approximately  800 students.

The petition was initiated by Ariel Villagomez, a political science student of NMC, and a copy will be given to NMC President Carmen Fernandez, who told the Variety on Wednesday that she was “open to meeting with [McPhetres] and to listen.”

In a separate interview, Villagomez said he is hoping that Fernandez will reconsider her decision not to renew the contract of McPhetres, one of NMC’s longest-serving and most well-known instructors.

Villagomez believes that Fernandez should hear students’ arguments before terminating the contract of their instructors.

Other students who signed the petition said that the non-renewal of McPhetres was “unfair.”

“We hope that it will not happen to other good instructors of NMC,” one of them said.

Another student, who declined to be identified, said she is urging other NMC students  to sign the petition.

“It will help students if NMC will keep outstanding instructors like McPhetres,” she said.

Citing the college’s slogan, “Student First,” the students said Fernandez should heed their petition.
