Most students are from Taiwan and South Korea and are here for their winter vacation.
“Usually they enroll in groups or organizations or through a church that has some link to either our church or our school,” said Wade D. Bacon, Eucon International School ESL director.
Eucon is located on Middle Road in Gualo Rai.
There are 90 students enrolled in the program.
Bacon said CNMI resident who wanted to develop their English language skills have also enrolled in the past.
“We have students from five-years-old, that’s probably the youngest, to those who are in their 50’s. The course is for anybody who wants to learn English. We also have some students in their 20s,” he added.
The students learn phonics, vocabulary, spelling, reading, writing and speech skills. Interactive activities to make the classes lively are also included. After finishing the course, the students are given certificates.
“It’s meant to be fun,” said Bacon.
Part of the program is also learning about the island’s culture.
The students go to the school Mondays through Fridays. On Saturdays, the students spend time with the team leaders from their classes, who take them to different places on-island for recreational activities.
Students can also join the ESL summer classes.
“They take in some of the culture and the scenery of the island. We also, as a Christian school, would like them to hear Gospel message while they are here,” said Bacon.
