The Associated Students of the Northern Marianas College, NMC’s student governance body that was first established back in 1986, developed a mission to promote higher education, represent student rights, and advocate student needs and concerns.
The current goals of ASNMC have not changed.
It continues to help prepare students at NMC to become responsible citizens by providing educational and social experiences and continues to serve as the unifying force of all student activities.
According to ASNMC president Miles Rodriguez, the goals for calendar year 2010 will be filled with exciting activities that will keep students busy.
Some of the events lined up include Charter Day, health awareness fair, spring kickoff bash, student assemblies, leadership conferences, and the graduation celebration, to name a few.
“We are looking forward to another exciting year and a complete agenda,” said Rodriguez. “We are also inviting those who have not enlisted as members to join our organization as volunteers.”
Officers of ASNMC include Rodriguez; Daniel Kintol, vice president; Stacey Demapan, secretary; and Mindy Park, treasurer.
They are responsible for the organization of student meetings and student assemblies.
According to Rodriguez, the organization conducts meetings on a monthly basis at the NMC Student Center.
The goals of the meetings are not only to improve communication with students and enhance leadership skills, but also plan out activities that everyone can enjoy.
“Miles and the rest of ASNMC officers make us all very proud. They have been a great contributor in our efforts for continuous improvements of academic programs and college activities. I hope that more students will find time to assist with upcoming activities,” said NMC interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera.
ASNMC has many volunteers throughout the semester. It expects this number to grow in the calendar year as more students express interest in the organization.
Grazing academy workshop on Saipan
(NMC) — A three-day workshop by Northern Marianas College’s Marianas Grazing Academy will be held on Feb. 3-5, in Room D-1 at the As Terlaje campus.
The academy aims to build local agricultural capacity and educate farmers and ranchers about increasing the economic viability of their products.
The workshops, which require no registration or participation fee, will include training on pasture and livestock management issues, including soil management, forage production, grazing management planning, weed control, forage selection, animal health and treatment practices, fecal analyses for parasitic infection, and meat quality and marketing.
The academy, a project organized through a collaborative effort between NMC’s Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service and experienced pasture, livestock, and soil specialists from the University of Hawaii, University of the Virgin Islands, and the University of Guam, seeks to enhance the production of high quality meat products, which can serve to improve food sustainability through the adoption of appropriate technologies and practices in grazing and livestock management.
The academy also seeks to provide local farmers, ranchers, technical resource personnel and other interagency collaborators with assistance and guidance in planning and developing special local projects to improve the economic viability of grazing activities in the CNMI.
The third day of the workshop will feature a pasture walk, where participants will be able to evaluate pasture conditions, monitor grazing and forage productions, and estimate stocking rates. Demonstrations and trainings will also be conducted on various concepts, such as herbicide treatment, field fecal examinations, and forage seed preparation and selection.
To register for the workshop, contact Dr. Allan Sabaldica at 433-2576 or Lawrence Duponcheel at 433-0639.
The Marianas Grazing Academy project has been made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Obtaining employment-based visas and advance parole
(SHRM) — The Society for Human Resource Management CNMI chapter will conduct a half-day seminar titled “Obtaining Employment-Based Visas and Advance Parole,” that will be presented by Walter Haith, Guam/CNMI field office director for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, at the Hyatt Regency Saipan on Thursday, Jan. 28, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
This timely seminar is open to the public and will be an invaluable opportunity for employers and employees to learn how to petition for an employment-based U.S. visa for any of the following four categories: 1) professional workers, 2) skilled workers, 3) transitional workers, or 4) religious workers.
Haith will also provide information on qualification criteria for each petition category, requirements for each visa classification, the validity of each classification, the cost of each petition and who must pay for it, and who can file a petition.
A presentation on “advance parole” will be provided, which will cover topics such as how to apply for advance parole, the processing time involved, expediting a parole, and what information should be included with an advanced parole application. Any nonresident worker that travels abroad will need an advance parole to re-enter the CNMI.
