Workshop discusses safety and handling hazardous materials in workplace

The speakers were Reynaldo C. Deleon Guerrero, OSHA onsite consultation project manager; and Michelle K. Duty, Coast Guard marine science technician first class.

Deleon Guerrero discussed safety in the workplace.

He said most of the time people compromise their safety and don’t know how to identify, report, and remove hazard.

“OSHA wants everybody to go home everyday safe. They are really at risk every day,” said Deleon Guerrero.

Duty gave a presentation on handling hazardous materials and provided information about material safety data sheets or MSDS.

“It provides them with all the information they need to know how to protect themselves and how to protect their employees,” she said.

She said many people these days don’t take the time to read the MSDS, which shows the chemical compounds of different materials used in the workplace.

“Education on how to handle hazardous materials is vitally important in the workplace. We care about people and we want them to have the best information available to them,” she said.

To provide a venue for more workshops is one of the goals of the Mariana Islands Water Operator Association, according to its vice chairman Mariano Iglecias.

“I’m glad that this association found the time to invite us so we can  share and promote that there are available resources on island,” said Deleon Guerrero

All the island’s water companies attended the workshop which drew the participation of at least 60 individuals.
