Library goes digital

JKPL will use the Greenstone digital library software platform that utilizes simple scanning protocols.

“It is essentially making use of a new software for digitizing rare significant cultural documents that basically illustrate and portray the Micronesian region transforming it to electronic formats so that it can be accessible to a larger audience online,” said public library executive director John Gonzales.

The training is to open to staff of PSS libraries, the CNMI Museum as well as Northern Marianas College’s CNMI Pacific Collections Archives.

The Pacific Resources for Education and Learning in Hawaii was contracted by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to conduct the professional development training in Micronesia and Hawaii.

“IMLS is considered our funding arm. They are able to provide technical and operational funds for all libraries throughout Micronesia,” Gonzales said.

The training will be led by PREL director and PDL project director Jane Barnwell. Karleen Manuel Samuel from the College of Micronesia in Pohnpei, coordinator of the PDL project, will assist Barnwell in the training.

“Samuel will be offering us first-hand experience on the logistical experiences they went through in getting the technology on line,” Gonzales said.

The technology, he added, “promotes the people and region to the world as well as preserves culture.”

The library’s information technology center will be closed from Monday to Wednesday next week but Internet service will be available at the homework center.
