1st round of Pacific Games golf qualifier set for Sunday

Check-in time is 11 a.m. and the tee time is 12 noon.

The tournament fee is $30.

The qualifier, Wabol said will be played on gross scores and the participants will drive at the white tee. The prizes, he added will be based on the number of entries.

Wabol said the stage one of the qualifying series will be conducted in four rounds. However, a fifth round maybe possible as make up round.

The golfers who will make it to the Top 12 will advance to the Round 2. These players will be ranked based on performance.

The NMI coordinating committee Wabol said is now trying to complete the golfers’ squad to represent CNMI in the Pacific Games in Nomea, New Caledonia next year.

Local golfers vying for the national team slot will have four rounds of qualifying series.

Open to all, the qualifying tournament, Wabol said, may extend to fifth round for a make up.

For the interested golfers, one of the requirements is U.S. citizenship. Participants must be a U.S. passport holder.

Wabol added that golfers will shoot at the white tee.

After the first stage of the qualifying round, the Top 12 golfers will advance to the finals which will be made up of eight to 10 rounds.

The coordinating committee hopes to have the qualifying round series done early this year so it can focus on team practice sessions and fund raising events.

Those willing to be part of CNMI golf team, this is the chance to earn the five slots including the player coach, for the national team.
