Victim testifies in sexual abuse case

During the jury trial in the courtroom of Associate Judge David Wiseman, the victim testified how Shafiqul Islam repeatedly sexually abused him last year.

Assistant Attorney General Brian Gallagher is prosecuting the case while Assistant Public Defender Michael Curtis Brown is the court-appointed attorney for Islam, currently out on bail.

5 victims

Police identified the two arrested defendants as Juan Camacho Taitano, 43, and Mark Thomas Doyle, 45.

Five children were victims in these two separate cases, police said.

DPS acting spokesman PO2 Jason Tarkong said Taitano was arrested on Sunday while Doyle was arrested on Monday.

Taitano is facing the charge of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree, while the charge of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree was filed against Doyle.

Taitano had two victims while Doyle victimized children playing at an Internet café and offered them money, police said.

Taitano was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after Associate Judge Perry Inos imposed a $50,000 bail during the defendant’s initial appearance yesterday.

Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo set a $100,000 bail for Doyle who appeared for his Gerstein hearing under the custody of the Department of Corrections.

It happened in Tanapag

In the Taitano case, DPS said it responded to a sexual abuse of a minor incident on March 6, 2010 at about 12:29 a.m. at a residence in Tanapag.

Upon arrival, officers learned that there were two victims — 14 and 10 years old.

Police met with the victims’ mother who said she was at work when the incident took place.

Both victims were asleep inside their rooms when Taitano committed the crime, the mother told police.

On March 7, 2010, Judge Inos issued an arrest warrant against Taitano.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigative Bureau learned that Taitano was at his part time job on a fishing boat and was scheduled to arrive back on shore at 5 p.m. on same day.

Tarkong said Deputy Commissioner Ambrosio Ogumoro authorized DPS boating safety section officers to assist CIB in executing the arrest warrant for Taitano.

On the same day, detectives arrived at the Smiling Cove Marina and met with the boating safety personnel.

During that time, the U.S. Coast Guard was at Smiling Cove with two Zodiac boats ready to launch  a separate operation, police said.

The U.S. Coast Guard offered their assistance to DPS in executing the arrest warrant for Taitano.

On March 8, 2010, at 6:31 p.m. U.S. Coast Guard personnel arrived at the Outer Cove Marina and handed Taitano to the detectives who then placed him under arrest.

“Deputy Commissioner Ambrosio Ogumoro would like to extend his gratitude to the U.S. Coast Guard personnel who assisted DPS in apprehending Taitano,” Tarkong said.

At an Internet café

In the case against Doyle, police dispatched personnel to a school for a reported sexual abuse of a minor complaint on March 8, 2010 at about 2:21 p.m.

Preliminary investigation revealed that several of the school’s students had been sexually assaulted by an individual, later identified as Doyle, at an Internet café.

Police learned that the incidents happened in the evening hours of Feb. 27,  March 1 and March 6, 2010, while the victims were at the Internet café playing computer games.

Police said the three victims were 12 and 13 years old, all boys.

One of the victims suffered bruises on the arm, police said.

The victims told police that while at the Internet café, one of them  was approached by a man, later identified as Doyle.

The victims said Doyle offered money in exchange for sexual acts on them.

Initially, police said the child refused but Doyle’s persistence resulted in him having sexual contact with the child while inside the men’s room of the Internet café.

Another victim claimed that while at the Internet café, Doyle also approached him and asked the victim to follow the defendant into the restroom.

The victim initially refused, police said, but Doyle grabbed the victim by the arm which caused a bruise.

Doyle insisted that the victim  accompany him to the restroom, police said.

But the victim still refused, sat down and continued playing games on the computer.

Moments later, as the second victim headed to the restroom, Doyle followed him and sexually abused the victim, police said.

After the preliminary interviews at the school, police said investigators headed to the Internet café to search for Doyle,

where he was found.

Doyle was positively identified by one of the victims as the man who sexually abused, police said.

He was arrested on March 8, 2010 at about 5:16 p.m., police said.

A  detective handling the case testified during yesterday’s Gerstein hearing for Doyle in Govendo’s courtroom.
