Six staffers of Running Style magazine, Nikkan Sports Shimbun newspaper, and Elle Online covered the March 6 marathon, half-marathon and 10K event held, which attracted approximately 500 Japanese competitors to the Northern Mariana Islands.
“The Marianas Visitors Authority was pleased to be able to help facilitate media coverage by these major publications,” said MVA Managing Director Perry Tenorio. “It’s a win-win situation. They get nice coverage of an attractive international marathon that is only a three-hour flight away from Japan, and the Northern Marianas gets cost-effective media exposure.”
Running Style will feature the marathon on four full-color pages in their May 2010 issue. The bi-monthly magazine has a circulation of 100,000 readers and targets men and women in their 20s to 40s.
Nikkan Sports Shimbun is a major sports newspaper distributed nationwide in Japan, as well as a major organizer of marathon events in Japan. The MVA invited two female runners who placed in one of the newspaper’s recent marathon to join the Saipan Marathon. The paper targets males in their 20s to 60s and circulates to nearly 900,000 readers with its Tokyo edition, which will feature the race in an issue later this month.
Elle Online is the biggest portal site focusing on fashion and women’s lifestyle, and the editor of their running section RUNLOG participated in the marathon. RUNLOG receives 500,000 page views per month, and the editor’s race report will featured in April.
While in Saipan, the media crew also conducted photo shoots at various tourist attractions showcasing visitor amenities. In addition to transportation and shooting permit assistance from the MVA, in-kind donations for the media coverage were made by Hyatt Regency Saipan, Hafadai Beach Hotel, Saipan Botanical Garden, Tasi Tours & Transportation, and Coffee Care.
