Guest workers to hold rally against alien registration law

He said they will stage rallies to protest the bill which, he added, was passed without consulting those who will be immediately affected by its implementation.

Syed said their group is now consulting with their lawyers regarding  the legal action that can be undertaken to challenge the new law’s validity.

On Monday, Gov. Benigno R Fitial, signed House Bill 17-25, the first law passed by the 17th Legislature.

The over 70-page bill, which is now Public Law 17-1, requires all nonresidents who have been in the CNMI for over three months to register with the Department of Labor.

“We are definitely not supporting this law. I hope the governor will reevaluate his position,” Syed said.

He said they will also ask the federal agencies to issue a statement regarding this issue “so it will not further confuse the situation.”

He added, “As far as we know, and as explained to us in many forums, the stay of nonresidents in the CNMI is already a federal matter.”
