Tourist areas priority of stray dog program

Mayor Donald G. Flores yesterday said they will soon make an announcement on the dog licensing and tagging program

Next week, his office will start cleaning up the facility for the animal shelter in Lower Base.

The Department of Public Lands allowed the mayor’s office to use public property for the program.

Flores said DPL only gave them a one-year permit but it is renewable every year.

He is hoping that the Zoning Board will allow them to operate in an area classified as an industrial zone.

The mayor’s office was able to secure $145,000 for the animal shelter project.

“I am very anxious to start the program,” Flores said, adding that his office continues to receive concerns about stray dogs on island.

He said they will adopt Tinian’s stray dog program.

After implementing the campaign in the tourist areas, Flores said they will proceed to the villages.

He once again encouraged community members to report to his office any dead animals in their areas.

“I am also asking the police to report to us. They’re always on the road most of the time,” Flores said.

As of April 8, the mayor’s office had already removed 102 dead animals from public roads.

Flores said they are getting support from the private sector and non-profit organizations like the Pet Assistance and Welfare Services of the CNMI.
