More than 100 foreign workers register for the alien registration scheme

Immigration officers said at around 8 a.m., workers of various nationalitieshave been waiting to the office to register.

The registration started at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Four new Immigration officers were assigned by the office to facilitate the registration.

The alien registration which started on August 16 will end on September 31. The registration fee is $25 and this would be paid at the Finance Office.

Immigration Director Jenkins Mariur said the two requirements to be brought during the registration are passport and working permit’s hard copies.

Under the alien registration, any foreign worker, parent or guardian of a child under the age of 18 years old is required to register at the BOI.

The aim of alien registration is to prevent overstaying and undocumented foreigners who are staying on the Island. This will also prevent the discrepancy with the Labor office on the number of foreign workers in Palau.

The director reiterated that overstaying workers who failed to register until Sept. 30 are subjected to fines despite the amnesty program being implemented by the bureau.

The fine is $5 per day.

Meanwhile, those who are members of diplomatic mission, formally recognized by the Ministry of State and their families, citizens of United States, Federated State of Micronesia and Republic of the Marshall Islands are exempted from registration. Also with the tourists and those aliens present in Palau at any time during the first seven calendar days of August and depart before September 1.

After the registration, the BOI will issue a registration card.
