Rota, Tinian to join PSS Youth Rock Festival

Jonas Barcinas, Hopwood Junior High School principal and one of the prime movers of the event, said the junior and high school students from Rota and Tinian will join their counterparts on Saipan in celebrating their “hard work, and end of the school year successes and achievements.”

He said the students from each school will perform skits, musical and dance numbers.

The program, which includes a raffle draw, will start at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.

Tickets are sold for $10 each but  only 500 people can join the celebration.

Tickets are sold in schools.

Barcinas said the Youth Advisory Panel is encouraging teachers and other staff to sponsor some of the students by purchasing tickets for them.

Teachers and school administrators are also invited to participate in the event, he added.

The Youth Advisory Panel thanked the student representative to the Board of Education, Francine Babauta, and all school advisors for planning the event, which is now in its second year.

It major sponsor is the Hard Rock Café, Barcinas said.

He thanked all school administrators for supporting the students and advisors  who have to attend the numerous planning meetings.

“We are hoping to make next year’s event a better one than this year,” he said. “Every year we get better and better in planning for this and other events.”

Created by PSS, the Youth Advisory Panel gathers students from  public high schools and junior high schools so they can discuss the problems facing the youth today, and offer possible solutions.
