Government expenditures from January to March 2010 totaled $39.5 million, according to the latest Economic Indicator that the Department of Commerce released.
The bulk of the taxes and fees came from business gross receipts: $12.254 million.
Fees from different licenses, which the government doubled, including charges for services, generated $8.523 million.
Taxes from hotel occupancy amounted to over $1.6 million during the first quarter of the year.
Fuel, container and bar taxes added over $1.1 million to the overall collections.
Although the government’s recorded expenditures of $39.50 million for the first quarter exceeded its tax collections, its spending already reflected a 16.5 percent drop compared to the previous quarter when it spent $47.32 million.
As the largest employer of the local workforce, the government’s single biggest expense is personnel which amounts to over $5 million every two weeks.
The government incurred a deficit of close to $17 million in fiscal year 2009.
The deficit for FY 2010 is projected to reach $25 million based on the six months expenditure report ending on March 31, 2010.
