Pacific leaders launch green energy initiative

Palau President Johnson Toribiong said  the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Nauru have agreed to fully endorse the Green Energy Micronesia Initiative.

FSM President Emmanuel Mori said the islands are especially vulnerable to energy price fluctuations which affect other government services.

Energy needs command more of their resources than their national budgets can afford, he added.

Toribiong said their goals include achieving 20 percent of power generation through renewable energy by 2020 and improved energy efficiency.

The four nations are  requesting technical support from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community through its North Pacific Regional Office based in Pohnpei, FSM.

The leaders are requesting for help in establishing a roadmap in support of the planned establishment of a Micronesia Energy Association which will complement the Green Energy Micronesia Initiative.

In Palau, the initiative started in  2009 with the government distributing energy efficient bulbs in exchange for ordinary light bulbs.

Toribiong said  several government buildings now have solar panels such at the Capitol, the hospital and the causeways.

Palau, like other Pacific island nations, doesn’t have its own source of fossil fuels.

The Micronesia leaders said that due to the threat of climate change, they must invest in developing renewable energy sources.
