Sonia Siwa of Paseo de Marianas Promoters Inc. told the Variety yesterday that they are planning to send the best seven performers from the 60-plus members of Saipan Awaodori Team to join the 25th anniversary of the Koenjie Awaodori Festival in Japan on Aug, 27-29, 2010.
Siwa said the children have started their coin drive fundraising at the San Jose-Microl intersection.
“We have to ask permission from the Department of Public Safety but it’s one of our fundraising activities,” Siwa said.
The group will also have a fundraising booth at the Garapan street market every Thursday night.
Siwa said the parents of the participants, for their part, will distribute solicitation letters to their friends and relatives.
“We are very proud to have a team that will represent Saipan in the biggest annual dance event in Japan and we will appreciate any support the community can offer to help defray expenses such as airfare and accommodation for the children,” Siwa said.
In 2008, the Saipan Awaodori Team sent six of its finest performers to Japan to join the Awaodori Festival. Last year, the group was not able to send any representatives due to financial constraints.
