Over 10,000 PSS students to take SAT10

Students from grades 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 11 will be tested in reading, language arts, spelling, math, science, and social studies.

In school year 2008-2009, SAT10 results indicated that PSS students were performing above the yearly progress target line by 2 percent.

Education Commissioner Dr. Rita A. Sablan reminded parents and the members of the community about the key roles they play in the children’s education.

She said she has noted a greater and increased partnership and cooperation between educators and the community.

“This is essential to build a better learning environment,” she added.

Parents are urged to:

• Talk to their child about the importance of testing and the role of assessments.

• Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before a test. Doctors say that most young children need 8 to 11 hours of sleep.

• Make sure your child eats properly on the day of a test.

• Maintain a pleasant home environment and avoid unnecessary conflicts. Wish your child good luck before he/she leaves for school.

If your child is disappointed after taking a test, reassure him/her that there will be plenty of future opportunities to improve and succeed.

Also, parents are encouraged to discuss with their children the following test-taking tips:

1. Read and follow directions carefully.

2. Work at a steady pace — not too fast or too slow.

3. Don’t worry about how fast other people finish their test; just concentrate on your own test.

4. Read each question completely before answering.

5. Focus on the question at hand. Don’t let your mind wander on other things.

6. Be neat — mark answers clearly.

7. Stay calm and take deep breaths to relax.

8. If you finish early, go back and check your answers.

9. Think positively.

10. Do your best.
