Friday payroll safe

A Finance staffer, however, said they were told that they would be paid on time.

Senate Vice President Jude U. Hofschneider, R-Tinian, said they were given assurance that the July 2 payroll would be released on time.

In a separate interview, Rep. Sylvestre I. Iguel, Covenant-Saipan, said  his “assumption is that the payroll would be taken care of.”

He, however, admitted that delayed payroll may be unavoidable if the economy continues to get worse.

“I am worried because we keep on tapping the funds of independent agencies. Eventually, we will deplete their funds. I am crossing my fingers that fresh investments would come in. I am optimistic and I’ve been praying a lot,” said Iguel.

Last June 18, firefighters, police officers, corrections officers, medical personnel and Public School System employees were the only ones paid on time.

The rest got their checks three days later.

PSS personnel

Public school teachers, administrators and staff will get their salary as scheduled tomorrow.

The Public School System yesterday gave this assurance to allay fears of a “payless payday.”

Yesterday, there were reports that PSS personnel would not get paid on Friday because the administration was planning to reprogram PSS funds.

But Education Commission Rita A. Sablan yesterday said teachers will get paid.

“I know that some of our personnel are concerned but there is no reason to worry because everybody will get their pay on Friday,” Sablan told Variety.

PSS finance director Richard Waldo, in a separate statement, said PSS personnel will “definitely get paid.”

“I can confirm that by the end of this working week, which is Friday, we are issuing checks for their regular salary,” Waldo said.

He had a meeting with Lt. Gov. Eloy Inos yesterday regarding the PSS budget.

A teacher, who declined to be identify, said a payless payday would be unfair.

“They should not do that. We are doing so much for PSS,” said the teacher, who declined to be identified.

She said the PSS slogan  is “Student First” which means “Education First.”

Another teacher said they were told that PSS will manually issue their checks on Friday afternoon.
